Our Border Collie had issues a week ago. He threw up, stop eating and became very lethargic. Took him to Banfield first. That vet said he had severe liver issue. Didnt know if cancer or toxicity or...? When we arrived to get Charlie, the receptionist coldly asked, "Do you want to take him elsewhere or schedule an appointment to put him to sleep?". WTH?!?! Banfield was rude, not cheap and very uncaring.
I give them 2 stars for successful surgery. My pit bull began vomiting one morning and continued throughout the day. I took him into Windcrest at the recommendation of the shelter I adopted him from. Windrest suggested X-rays ($400) and found he had a foreign object stuck in his stomach. They basically said I could wait for him to pass it, they recommended I leave him there overnight for "observation" at a cost of $1,600 to $2,300. Since I could not afford that, I took him home to observe him myself. He continued to throw up to try to remove the object and 12 hours later I brought him back to Windcrest not knowing what to do. There was little guidance from the vet. I arrived at midnight and explained I had been there 12 hours ago and I think he needed surgery. They said it would be $3,000 plus $900 per day for after care. And they gave me a credit application to apply for credit at 21% interest. I think this is unconscionalbe that they would charge this much money to people who are in need of urgent medical care for their pets. Had I known this place was a money mill I definitely would have taken him elsewhere. So while they fixed my dog, I actually had to request a credit limit increase and will be paying this off for YEARS. If other vets can provide this service at a reasonable cost, this place is basically taking advantage of people, and the people and their pets pay the price by either becoming buried in debt or worse, surrendering their pets? The people who own and run this place should be ashamed of themselves. They offer no payment plans and would not even admit my dog until I had paid. I warn you, do not take your pet here if you have an emergency unless you have a lot of money. Find another animal hospital with a conscience that cares about providing reasonable health care to pets.
I have a bunny who I took here. It's an amazing building and the staff I dealt with we're very nice. But to even have my rabbit seen was $72.00. Which is outrageous. Then I find out my rabbit needs to have his teeth filed. (Commen in rabbits) and the doctor I saw said it was a simple procedure and went through it with me. Then the nurse came in after he left to give me the prices. They want over $1400.00 to file my rabbits teeth. A $150 dollar procedure else where. I loved the vet who helped. But that price is outrageous and makes me question their motives.
We decided to get a second opinion from Wincrest. The vet there received trst results before seeing our dogger. She was expecting to see a dog on his death bed, requiring hospitalization. Charlie was active and alert. After many tests, it was confirmed that he does have liver issues but, the Doc wanted to attack some of the potential causes. He is on a regiment of meds now. His bad case of jaundice is much better. The doc said, "Charlie looks good for a yellow dog" lol. He is eating. He is pooping. He is energetic. There still might be serious issues w a bad outcome. But, the people at Windcrest really seemed to care. Nancy was the assistant or nurse that helped. We cant say enough great things about her. She was on the floor w Charlie, helping him to take meds, eat a little food and getting kisses. What a wonderful person! Id like to give kudos to doc as well, but cant recall her name.
Very gentle and quiet with my rabbit during her wellness exam. The vet clearly understood rabbits as a species and used delicate, purposeful movements with her so that she wouldn't startle. She's a big, 8lb girl, and doesn't like being held (like most rabbits), but she seemed to relax in their arms. I would definitely come back if they were closer to where I'm living now!!!!
We used to take our chinchillas here but have since switched to Penn Vet in Philadelphia. The prices here are easily double or sometimes triple the standard for exotics care, which is already expensive, and after taking our chinchilla to Penn Vet for a tooth trimming, we've found that the care they receive there is as good or better for a much lower price. Windcrest estimated $800 to $1,000 to trim his teeth, while the same procedure was a little less than $100 at Penn Vet.
They are not the cheapest....but, a little extra money for hope and more time with your 4 legged family member is worth it.
If you aren't local enough to Philly and are looking for a chinchilla vet, I recommend going to the Hockessin location of this affiliation and asking for Dr. Dallatore, who is excellent with chinchillas.
