We (the adult kids) had a phone consultation with Bill in May 2016 to discuss our father’s situation and how he could help with the Medicaid application process.
Attorney Erhart addressed my needs in establishing multiple trusts. He is very knowledgeable, professional and honest. I recommended him to all my family members and friends and more than a couple retained his firm and had the same experience I have had. I run a service based business and I’ve provided consultations for hundreds of families. Over the past 10 years, I’ve seen and heard a lot. It’s difficult to shock me.
However, our interaction with Bill was disappointing. During our phone consult, he seemed annoyed at our questions. After about 35 minutes, it seemed like he wanted to get off the phone. Before I could get in a last question about potential next steps, he abruptly hung up on us.
We are all located out of state, so we were looking for somebody with local expertise to help guide us through the process. While we could’ve potentially completed the application on our own, a local expert would save us time and minimize the risks of making mistakes that would jeopardize the success of the application.
However, Bill’s tone and the extremely unprofessional way of how he ended the conversation left me speechless. This was in sharp contrast with other lawyers whom we consulted with.
My father and I met Mr. Erhart to do a Power of Attorney. He articulated the various elements of this document in a way we could easily understand. He also connected with my father in a very supportive, empathetic manner. As my parents age they will likely need assistance with other family legal issues like these and, because of the kindness and knowledgeable assistance from Mr. Erhart and his staff, we will certainly be contacting his office again.
We identified a couple of elder care lawyers to consider. Bill was recommended to us by two independent sources, a home health agency and another lawyer, so we felt that was a good sign.
I’d like to think there are better ways to end a conversation. Regardless, I wanted to give them a second chance and the benefit of the doubt, so I emailed his administrative assistant with follow-up questions about services and pricing. No response.
Perhaps he thought we were just trying to get free advice? Perhaps he didn’t hear that I was still speaking when he hung up?
We probably had some annoying questions. We are new to the process and had a lot of basic, but also some detailed questions. Maybe he wasn’t annoyed at all and that’s just how he talks. A lot can get misconstrued in a phone conversation.
